This video is the summary of the 20 Quick Start introduction to visual web developer 2008 express edition video series.

(Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)

I concluded on everything i have been doing, and promise to create 500 videos on ASP.NET, Ajax, LINQ, SQL Server 2005 and so on. There are so many things that we havent done, which includes sending email from your application, file upload, xml, validation controls, and so on.

My next video series will be about validation controls, this is very important for you to know so you can protect your database from bad data.

I mumbled a bit then i got my senses back. i remembered i should show you how to deploy your website. I showed how to get to the files and deploy them to either through local IIS, FTP, Filesystem, or remote site with frontpage extension. There are numerous way to get your website onto the internet and it’s your choice on what you want to use.

In the future i’ll show you how to upload your files to an internet hosting company, this is not easy but with a little help from a friend it will be easy. I hope you have enjoyed these videos and please leave comments.

In this video i’ll be continue from video 16 where i showed you how to change the DestinationPageURL of the CreateUserWizard control. Here i changed the DestinationPageURL of the Login control so that when a user logs in they are taken to this page. I created a new page for our members only, and this is the page i’ll send users to when they login.

(Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)

I continued by changing the look and feel of the login controls to match our website. There is no coding required, just few clicks.

Creating roles for your members is very important, well if you need it. If you need to protect content/pages from different levels of users, you can use the built-in roles feature. You can access this feature from the ASP.NET configuration page. I created 2 roles, one for users and one for admin.

I added all website users to the Users role so in the future when i implement this concept the website users wont be able to view the admin page.

I demonstrated how to use LoginName control which is used to display the username of the user when they login. I also used the LoginView which is a control that displays different information depending on if the user is logged in or out. Whatever is written in the AnonymousTemplate is displayed when the user is not logged in, and whatever is written inside the LoggedInTemplate will be displayed when the user logs in.

Watch video and leave comments.

In this video i continued from the last video and added a control for users to register themselves. I explained more features that are available on the ASP.NET Configuration page, some of these features will be explained in details in the future video. I added a CreateUserWizard onto the page so user can create themselves as members of our website.

(Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)

I added a registration form onto the website so user can use it to create a new account. I showed how to modify the Continue button which is useful for sending user to a page we want after they have logged in. You look for ContinueDestinationPageURL on the properties windows so you get desired page to send user after a user has registered.

We can view this new user that we create on the database from the ASP.NET Configuration page, and we have access to all its properties such as edit, delete or set roles. The role of a user will be covered in the next video so watch out for video 17.

In this video i’ll be showing you how to change the layout of the datalist from within the source. You can modify the HTML to your heart content, you can change the css styles and the way the data is displayed by using a table. You can get very creative with the Datalist because it provides its code in a very easy form to modify using simple HTML tags.

(Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)

I modified the width of the table container that holds the datalist so it can be wide enough to display our news correctly. I showed how to change the title to bold.

The datalist was added to the master page, this means that all our page will display the same information on this section. If you want you can add another datalist to a specific page and connect it to a datasource that you want in order to display inforrmation on that page from the datasource. Data sources include LINQ, Sitemap, SQL Server database, Access database, XML file and so on. All this can be bound to a datalist and every other controls in the Data section of the Toolbox.

I modified the css style of the datalist from the properties windows, by adding a border and i changed the alternating item background color (watch video). This makes the datalist to be more pleasing to the eye.

You can modify the datalist to display the last item first, especially in our case, we want the latest news first and old news last. This property can be set on the properties windows.
